Kat’s Thoughts:
I don’t know *someone* who hasn’t started tapping in a version of this shoe! But it’s been improved in the (many) years since I took tap as a kiddo!
Improvements made over the years? Numerous but I’ll stick to the BIG ones that stick out in my mind.
The material of the shoe itself has become marginally softer (the Jr Tyette isn’t the “softest/squishiest” of this type of tap shoe) – but they’ve added the heel padding to keep those heels protected! I remember getting my first blisters there…. *sigh* That said – these shoes are pretty durable and most kids tend to outgrown them rather than outwear them.
The TeleTone taps do produce a very nice robust (not tin-ny) sound. So that’s a definite plus if you’re looking for sound quality on these.
The lower vamp (front of the shoe) and sides also helps on the comfort factor. Especially since a lot of kids feet tend to be “puffy” and not yet flattened out evenly. Particularly toddlers! So this helps when the foot hits the demi-pointe position (like when walking or doing some tap moves) and alleviates pressure points on top of the foot.
The other BIG development industry wide? The elastic over the instep! This eliminates the need for ribbons to hold the shoes on the foot (so the ribbons become more of an aesthetic rather than attachment usage). Capezio’s is sewn in (other companies offer this feature as a snap in).
Sizing Info: These really do run quite true to street shoe size. But I’d warn you – they do run slightly narrow. If you want growing room – add no more than one size. They’ll flop off otherwise. I’d usually go with a half size.

When you go into a local dance store – please realize that you are possibly paying a small premium for their expertise, knowledge, and having (most) products there on hand. That’s not cheap. Please don’t go “window shopping” there only to save a few bucks. Especially on products under $100, it’s really not worth it. Support your local store. Please.
